Fist of the North Star’s Plot
Set in a dystopian future after a disastrous nuclear war has damaged the Earth, Fist of the North Star follows Kenshiro, the stoic and powerful martial artist known as the “Fist of the North Star.” Kenshiro can perform a deadly martial art style known as Hokuto Shinken, which lets him strike pressure points on his opponents, causing them to explode from within.
His mission for justice and redemption leads him through a desolate wasteland filled with ruthless warlords, mutant gangs, and a world in turmoil.
As Kenshiro roams the unforgiving post-apocalyptic landscape, he searches for his kidnapped love interest, Yuria, and confronts his adopted brother and arch-nemesis, Raoh, in a battle for supremacy. Along the way, he meets many characters, each with their unique martial arts styles and tragic backstories, adding depth and complexity to the story.
The Manga
Fist of the North Star, created by Buronson and illustrated by Tetsuo Hara, made its debut in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1983. The series ran until 1988, consisting of a total of 245 issues. Its chapters were later compiled into 27 manga volumes, initially published under Shueisha’s Jump Comics imprint.
In 2006, a 14-volume kanzenban edition was released by Shogakukan under the Big Comics Selection imprint, featuring the original water-colored artwork from its Weekly Shōnen Jump serialization and most of the omitted opening pages. While it lacked some of the additional artwork from previous editions, this edition was a collector’s delight.
To commemorate the series’ 30th anniversary, Tokuma Shoten re-released it in an “Ultimate Edition” spanning eighteen volumes, available from September 20, 2013, to July 19, 2014. This edition featured new cover illustrations by Hara and included an additional chapter in the 11th volume.
The Anime
The series has seen multiple animated adaptations that have further proved its success as a beloved classic. The first animated series aired in 1984, comprising 109 episodes and faithfully adapting the manga’s early arcs.
In addition to the anime, there have been several animated films, including “Fist of the North Star: The Movie” (1986) and “Fist of the North Star: Legend of Raoh – Chapter of Fierce Fighting” (2007), which expanded on key storylines. Furthermore, there have been numerous spin-off OVAs (original video animations), such as “Fist of the North Star: New Saviour Legend” (2006) and “Fist of the North Star: Yuria Den” (2007), which explored side stories and characters in greater depth.
