Fan of ice hockey? Satoru Noda has got you covered. His latest sports manga, titled “DOGSRED,” is set to make its debut in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine on July 27. Previously, it was revealed that Noda would be relaunching his “Supinamarada!” ice hockey manga, with the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper reporting a spring 2023 release.
This relaunch will see “Supinamarada!” re-titled as DOGSRED. The magazine referred to it as a “recreation,” and interestingly, the characters in both the old and new manga share the jersey number 66. With the stage set for intense ice hockey action, fans can’t wait to witness an ice hockey story and Noda’s remarkable artwork once again in this upcoming manga series.
From Blue Lock’s football to Haikyuu’s volleyball to Kuroko no Basket’s basketball to Birdie Wing’s golf to even a Ping Pong manga; the sports genre in the manga universe has got it all. Now, we’re blessed with an ice hockey manga, and if the manga is successful enough, we’re sure to get an anime adaptation of this series.
Picture this: razor-sharp blades slicing through the ice, lightning-fast shots fired at the net, and bone-crushing checks that’ll leave you craving for more. That’s what we expect from DOGSRED. Will it live up to expectations?
Supinamarada!
Supinamarada! marked Satoru Noda’s debut manga series after serving as an artist assistant for nearly a decade. Inspired by his love for hockey and his home town of Hokkaido, Noda wished to create a unique story that stood out in the sports manga genre.
Although hockey-related manga wasn’t a new concept, Noda recognized the sport’s relative rarity in the manga community. Serialized in Weekly Young Jump from 2011 to 2012, Supinamarada! faced plenty of ups and downs, including a difficult-to-recall title and a slow start, resulting in its discontinuation after 15 months at the advice of his editor.
However, the following success of Noda’s Golden Kamuy led to a newly discovered appreciation for Supinamarada! among fans and critics alike, with both series sharing a character named Toshimitsu Nihei, connecting the works fascinatingly and intriguingly.
The Plot of Supinamarada!
In the heart-wrenching aftermath of a tragic car accident that claimed his mother’s life, fifteen-year-old figure skater Shirakawa Rou’s dreams were shattered, leaving him “grief-stricken” and unable to participate in his Olympic qualifying performance.
With no one to lean on, Shirakawa and his twin sister Haruna move from bustling Tokyo to the quiet town of Tomakomai, Hokkaido, under the care of their maternal grandfather.
One day, Shirakawa crosses paths with the hockey-loving Genma brothers, an encounter that became a blessing in disguise. In a courageous move, he decides to join his school’s ice hockey team. This series follows Shirakawa’s journey as he learns the ways of ice hockey and faces off against rival schools.
And let’s not forget about Noda’s awe-inspiring art style. Every page is inked with dynamic action sequences, creatively detailed backgrounds, and expressions so vivid, you can practically feel the passion emanating from the characters. This manga is set to be an absolute visual paradise that will have us turning the pages faster than we can read.
With “DOGSRED,” we’re surely in for a rollercoaster of emotions as our protagonists face their rivals on the ice and their personal demons. From stories of victory against all odds to the struggles that come with achieving dreams, we’re sure this manga will make us feel as if we’re the ones striving for success.
