Just this morning, Netflix announced that it’s producing an animated series based which derives from the popular card game Magic: the Gathering. The director-brother duo Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame, ” have hopped on board to executive produce Magic: The Gathering Animated. Henry Gilroy (a writer you may remember from “Star Wars Rebels”) and Jose Molina (from “The Tick”) will serve as lead writers for the said project.
The Russo brothers said that they have been fans and players of “Magic: The Gathering” for as long as it has been around. Therefore to bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for them.
Magic isn’t a new game, it:s been out there for years, 26 to be precise. The game is centered upon an elaborate fantasy world, and it has storylines that talk about wizards aka Planeswalkers. Magic novel was recently included in The New York Times bestseller list.
The plot of Magic isn’t that strong, but the plot armor is heavy, it’s more about using elaborate spells.
For now, this information wasn’t supplemented with more, Netflix hasn’t announced an episode count orfor Magic: The Gathering. But what we do know is that the series will be produced by the studio Octopie.
There have been many attempts to turn Magic into a full-length feature film, with 20th Century Fox previously having attempted with famed “Game of Thrones” writer Bryan Cogman working on the script. Guess Netflix got lucky this time around. More details are awaited.
