2018 released, American superhero movie Aquaman did wonders in the box office, and now that a second movie is confirmed, fans have been getting restless to more details of what the team has planned in store for them. The original movie was directed by James Wan, and it met with favorable reviews from the critics as well as the audiences, and it was evident from the movie’s mega-collection at the box-office.

With over $1.1 billion grossing worldwide, Aquaman became the highest-ranking DC movie thereby snatching the title previously held by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (released back in 2012). In a recent interview, the director, James Wan revealed how the upcoming second installment would be different from the first movie, and thankfully, we have gathered all the details of the interview, so here is everything you need to know.

According to the director, Aquaman 2 is being developed in a ‘new way,’ and the movie will be more serious, and ‘relevant’ than the first installment. Relevant as in ‘relevance with the current world that we are living in, and that’s exactly what the team is aiming to achieve with Aquaman 2’, says the director. Apart from that, it was also confirmed that that the upcoming sequel will visit ‘new world,’ and anything more than that is still kept under wraps, so we’ll probably have to wait for some time to know more about the movie.

Aquaman 2: Story, Cast and update

As for the official story, we do know a little bit thanks to Jason Momoa, and according to him, the first film was Arthur’s origin story, and the sequel will focus on how he honed his skills to be the king. Momoa revealed that Arthur had all those abilities from his childhood, however, he never really mastered it, and in the Justice League, fans got to see ‘maybe two minutes of his old life,’ so, in the sequel, his whole journey of becoming the king will be shown, and the last frame of the movie will show Arthur becoming the person he destined to be.

According to David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Aquaman 2 won’t be adapting any particular comic book, however, fans could dive into ‘any Silver Age story featuring Black Manta’ to get the vibe of the upcoming story as Black Manta would be returning and he will create more trouble than ever.

The official cast of Aquaman 2 hasn’t been revealed yet, however, we do know that Jason Momoa will reprise his role of Arthur Curry / Aquaman. Apart from him, Patrick Wilson who played the role of Orm Marius / Ocean Master (Arthur’s half-brother and former king of Atlantis) will also make his return, and according to him, ‘Wan’s concepts for Aquaman 2 are pushing it even further.’ Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has also confirmed his return and while others are yet to be revealed, we expect to see Willem Dafoe, Amber Heard, and Nicole Kidman back in action as well.

Aquaman 2 will be released on 16th December 2022.
