Ryōta Yamasato, part of the Nankai Candies comedian duo, is set to voice a character in the upcoming anime film “City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust.” Playing a minor role, Yamasato’s character engages in comical advances toward Angie, extending an invitation for a date. Scheduled to debut in Japan on September 8, the movie will mark the 35th anniversary of the beloved City Hunter franchise.
While North American, U.K., and Irish audiences have to wait for 2024 for the movie screenings, courtesy of Anime Limited, Crunchyroll continues to stream the City Hunter TV series, specials, and films. Discotek Media secured licensing rights for the original anime projects and the recent “City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes” film back in April 2019.

City Hunter: Angel Dust News
Director Kenji Kodama, known for his work on the City Hunter franchise, directs the upcoming film, collaborating with Sunrise and The Answer Studio Co., Ltd. The screenplay is handled by Yasuyuki Mutō, known for his work on Deadman Wonderland. Aniplex distributes the anime film.
The anime film’ trailer previews the theme songs; the opening theme song, Whatever Comes, and the ending song, Get Wild (the series’ ending theme song), are performed by TM Network. A set of new cast and characters were previously announced as well.
The cast includes Angie, voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro, is a movie producer who came to Japan to shoot a movie about her cat but lost her cat in the process. She reaches out to City Hunter for his help. Shin Kaibara voiced by Kenyuu Horiuchi, is a mercenary leader who raised Ryō as a warrior as he had battle-fighting experience.
Pirarucu voiced by Tomokazu Seki- A member of the “Wetworks” assassination team. Espada is voiced by Subaru Kimura- A member of the “Wetworks” assassination team.
The film will also bring back three characters from the “Cat’s Eye” anime; Keiko Toda voicing Hitomi, Chika Sakamoto voicing Ai, and Rica Fukami voicing Rui. Ryo Saeba is voiced by Akira Kamiya, Kaori Makimura is voiced by Kazue Ikura, Saeko Nogam is voiced by Harumi Ichiryūsai, Umibōzu is voiced by Tesshō Genda, and finally, Miki is voiced by Mami Koyama.
The plot upcoming film dives into the past of Ryo Saeba, focusing on the tragic loss of his former partner, Hideyuki Makimura. Set against this backdrop is the pivotal element of Angel Dust, which held significance in the original series as well. The movie will explore Ryo’s history coupled with the meaning of Angel Dust in his life.
In a 2005 TV Asahi poll, City Hunter ranked 66th among the top 100 animated TV series as voted by viewers. The characters Ryo and Kaori rose to popularity in no time, with Ryo placing first in the “Best Male Character” category in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and Kaori moving from 15th to 8th in the “Best Female Character” category between 1988 and 1989.
The anime’s first ending theme, “Get Wild” by TM Network, along with a 1989 remix, collectively sold over 515,010 singles in Japan. The series also found popularity in France, where it aired as “Nicky Larson,” with 140 episodes airing in the early 1990s.
