2019 was the year of Atlanta, as the FX show won two Emmys and two Golden Globes. Donald Glover’s comedy is supposed to be back for Season 3. But the slight disappointment is that it won’t be back as soon as you expected it to be. FX Networks CEO John Landgraf at the TV critics’ meeting, earlier this February 4 made it clear that the series is behind schedule. The Georgia-based show was renewed for a third season in June and was supposed to return this year.
Landgraf said the writers for Atlanta are working on new episodes for Season 3. Network spokesman John Solberg made it clear that the show won’t be back this year to be considered for Emmy Awards of 2019. According to Landgraf, Glover has been dealing with a foot injury and specific personal issues that involve his extended family.
Donald Glover, according to Landgraf, is a media mogul but he happens to have an incredibly complicated life. Glover plays a rapper Childish Gambino who’s hurt his foot in September. This injury forces him to postpone several shows. His upcoming “This is America” tour has dates in Europe. Besides, he will be headlining Coachella in April.
Landgraf said he wishes earnestly, for fans of Atlanta and for the network that show would make it to TV regularly. While there is no doubt that Atlanta Season 3 would happen, we don’t know for sure when. Solberg added that whenever Season 3 of Atlanta returns, it won’t be for this particular upcoming Emmy cycle. This cutoff date for this year’s Emmys is May 31, 2019.
Naturally, we can expect Atlanta to be back by 2020. Atlanta wrapped its second season in September of 2018. Glover has spent much of 2018 on tour as his music alter ego Childish Gambino. He has voiced the part of Disney’s summer blockbuster “The Lion King,” which is in theaters July 19.
