Shy: Debut, Staff, Cast, Plot
“Shy” is both written and illustrated by the artist Bukimi, Miki. This manga series found its home in Akita Shoten’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Champion, starting in 2019, in issue #35. The story’s chapters have been compiled into individual manga volumes, with the first volume hitting the shelves in 2019.
Impressive enough, as of August 2023, Shy boasts a total of twenty volumes. For English fans, the exciting news came in July 2022 when Yen Press announced their licensing of the series for publication in North America during the Anime Expo.
The Staff
The anime adaptation of Shy is directed by Masaomi Andō, accompanied by Kōsaku Taniguchi as assistant director, and produced by Studio 8-Bit. The series scripts are written by Yasuhiro Nakanishi, the character designs are handled by Yūichi Tanaka, and Hinako Tsubakiyama composes the music.
The Cast
The newly announced cast includes Mutsumi Tamura voicing Stigma, Miyuki Sawashiro voicing Tzveta, and Rina Hidaka voicing Kufufu (Keheheh).
The previously announced cast includes Nao Tōyama as Iko Koishikawa, Tomokazu Sugita as Ebio (Shrimpy), Mamiko Noto as Spirit, Shinichiro Miki as Stardust, Sayumi Suzushiro as Lady Black, Ayumu Murase as Mian Long, and Kikuko Inoue as Unilord.
The Plot
Amidst the brink of a third World War, superpowered individuals emerged worldwide, becoming their nations’ symbols of peace and justice. Among them is teenage heroine Teru “Shy” Momijiyama, Japan’s representative.
When the threat, Amalareiks, surfaces, Shy joins forces with her fellow heroes to thwart this menace. Despite her self-doubt, she’ll prove that she possesses the heart of a true hero, even as she deals with her insecurities.
With 20 volumes, this manga stands out in the bustling world of superhero-inspired manga. What sets it apart? Well, it features a female shounen main heroine, a predominantly female cast with subtle GL undertones, and a strong emphasis on emotional growth, all masterfully illustrated.
However, “SHY” isn’t about politics; it’s about the hearts of people and their battles with grief, a classic shounen theme of finding one’s inner spark, acceptance, and protection.
The series lives on emotional moments, making it distinct from the action-packed “BnHA” or the complex plots of “Keyman.” It centers around feelings and mood, leaving us wondering whether it will lean more into action or explore shoujo-ai relationships in the future. Nevertheless, its unique style and mood are captivating, making it a quality work worth exploring.
In a world where superheroes and cute anime girls reign supreme, SHY offers a refreshing blend of both, making it a must-read for all manga enthusiasts.
