The Plot of Unnamed Memory
Witches- would love to be one but wouldn’t love to be around one. Unnamed Memory follows a prince of the Kingdom of Farsas named Oscar. As a child, he was cursed by an evil witch and now carries a burdensome fate that prevents him from having an heir. Determined to break the spell, he embarks on a journey to find Tinasha, the most powerful witch in the entire continent.
The twist? She will only grant your wish if you can climb up her tower. But worry not as Oscar reaches the top of her tower. However, instead of asking for a solution to undo his curse, he asks Tinasha to become his bride. What now?!
Kazuya Miura is directing the anime with ENGI as the producer. Deko Akao is in charge of the series composition, Chika Nōmi designs the characters, taking inspiration from the original character designs, and Akito Matsuda composes the music. The cast includes Yoshiki Nakajima voicing Oscar and Atsumi Tanezaki voicing Tinasha.
Unnamed Memory, penned by Kuji Furumiya, debuted as a web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō novel website in 2012. Later, it caught the attention of ASCII Media Works, who licensed the series and published it under their Dengeki no Shin Bungei imprint, with illustrations by Chibi. The light novel collected six volumes and ended in 2021.
Adding more to the original series, an exciting sequel titled ‘Unnamed Memory: After the End’ started in 2022. A manga adaptation, illustrated by Naoki Koshimizu, started serialization in Dengeki Daioh magazine in 2020. The manga has been compiled into four volumes as of January 2023.
What to Expect?
With an engaging narrative filled with magic and mystery, Unnamed Memory, written by Kuji Furumiya, leaves readers engrossed from start to finish. The title, no doubt, raises questions. Why is it titled “Unnamed Memories?”
As the story unfolds, it becomes pretty clear that the essence of the book lies in the “unnamed” memories of its characters, particularly the witch Tinasha. With her vast collection of memories, many of which bring pain, Tinasha becomes the focal point of the dangerous events happening around Oscar and his kingdom.
Despite some minor issues (which we hope are cleared in the anime), Unnamed Memory delivered an enjoyable read. The deep-diving into the long-lived witch’s past is creatively written, while the fantasy elements and other character interactions keep readers hooked.
While further character development for Oscar is needed, the foundation laid down in the introductory volume of the manga leaves readers wanting to know more about Tinasha and why exactly her memories inspired the title.
