Pompo, The Cinéphile- Details
Pompo, the Cinéphile is a popular Japanese manga series created by Shogo Sugitani. It was serialized online via the Pixiv Comic website in 2017 and has since gained a large fandom. It has collected four manga volumes published by Media Factory.
The success of the manga spawned several spin-offs, including Fran: The Cinéphile, which began in 2018, Kāna: The Cinéphile, released as a standalone volume in 2020, and Mazurka: The Cinéphile, which started in 2022. In 2021, the anime film adaptation of Pompo: The Cinéphile premiered in Japan, which we now can experience in a Blu-ray format.
The anime film is directed by Takayuki Hirao and produced by CLAP. The character design was handled by Shingo Adachi. The film’s opening number, “Dance on Fire,” was performed by the talented Seiko Niizuma, while the theme song, “Mado wo Akete” (Open a Window), was performed by the up-and-coming female singer CIEL.
Iori Kanzaki composed three vocal songs for the film. The virtual singer Kaf lent her voice to the insert song “Tatoeba” (For Example), while the vocalist EMA from DUSTCELL delivered performed the film’s other insert song, “Hangyakusha no Bokura” (We the Rebels).
The Plot of Pompo, The Cinéphile
Joelle Davidovich Pomponette, aka Pompo, is a talented movie producer who has inherited her grandfather’s exceptional movie-making skills, industry connections and impressive cinematic instincts. You would think she puts out blockbusters, right? No, Pompo exclusively produces only “low-budget, trashy B-movies.”
When Pompo’s assistant, Gene Fini, stumbles upon a script written by Pompo, he claims he needs to see this made into a movie, and that’s how he lands his first directorial role. Determined to create a masterpiece, Gene loses himself in the project. But as the pressure increases and the deadline inches closer, he must sacrifice whatever is needed for artistic creations.
From the very beginning, Pompo, the anime film that took Anime NYC by storm, had audiences staring at its stunning cinematography. The world of Nyallywood burst to life with vibrant colours and dynamic visuals and made us feel as if it was produced by MAPPA.
Pompo is an absolute hidden gem in the anime film community that deserves all the recognition it gets and more. With its fast-paced direction, lovable cast, and playful, colourful aesthetic, it appeals to almost everyone. At its core, it’s the themes, such as the unconventional film editing methods and the visually pleasing cinematography that leave a lasting impact on viewers.
