Alice in Borderland, Netflix’s Newest Live-Action Debuts Next Month

In the line-up of Netflix’s original Japanese Live-action adaptations, a new series titled Alice in Borderland is going to release on December 10th all over the world. It is based on the manga of the same name from Haro Aso. The series was announced earlier this year. In anticipation of the series, the youtube channel for Netflix dropped a new trailer with English subtitles.

Alice in Borderland is a Japanese Shonen manga that was published between 2010 to 2016 compiling in 18 volumes. It features a suspense game featuring the main characters in a struggle of survival against the hurdles of an unknown world. The characters in focus are Arisu, Karube, and Segawa, some normal highschool students as they are in their typical lives. In a supernatural event, these three are transported to a parallel world due to a wish from Arisu (translated to Alice). This world is on its end and as they are spotted in the world, people engage them in life-threatening games. The only way for them to survive is to clear the games in this “Borderland”

The girl seen with Arisu is Usagi Yuzuha. She is a resident of the Borderland whom Arisu and Kurabe meet during one of the games in the new world. She is essentially the heroine of the story who remains close to Arisu in all the quests that the hero has to face from thereon. Both get really close to each other as they survive more and more life-threatening situations.

Shinsuke Sato, the director known for Bleach’s live-action is returning to work with Netflix for this series. Yoshiki Watabe and Yasuko Kuramitsu did the scripts. The production for the film is done by the ROBOT studio. As you can see from the trailer, the suspense is pretty apparent from the start and the kids will be on the edge throughout their time in the Borderland. They would want to escape as soon as possible to their own world but things are not as simple as they would hope.

Among some of the successful live-action films airing on Netflix, Sato has his name on the Bleach movie that came back in 2018. It is always a risk bringing the manga fiction to the real world as the screenplay is quite different from the original work. The movie needs to be more cinematic and events are shown in such a way that the audience can imagine it happen in the real world, despite the possibility of it happening being next to none. If the trailer is anything to go by, this series is going to be similar to the Bleach movie’s style and it will be enjoyable for both the manga fans and new audience. Of course, the language was kept Japanese featuring English subtitles as the main focus is the Japanese audience. To be honest, the English subbed content is enjoyable and feels much more natural.
