Seo In Guk might be the lead in an upcoming MBC K-drama. The news comes according to a report released by Sports Kyunghyang (via Soompi) on Wednesday, March 4. The report states that Seo In Guk will play the lead character in MBC’s upcoming K-drama “Smoking Gun”. Sources related to him, however, have stated that the singer-turned-actor is still considering the offer and nothing has been finalized yet.
“Smoking Gun” is an action-thriller drama that is about a former South Korean agent who suffers from memory loss and a North Korean secret agent who is trying to kill him. The intense chase that the two are involved in is in order to stop a terrorism plot. The screenwriting of the drama comes from Park Hye Jin, who has worked on the writing of the popular romantic drama “The Emperor: Owner of the Mask.”
The role that Seo In Guk is reportedly in talks for is of Kim Do Young, who is an analyst at South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS). He becomes a suspect of committing a crime he didn’t do, and his memory loss about the whole incident doesn’t help either. Kim Do Young is trying to find who framed him for the crime and get to the truth.
If Seo In Guk accepts to take the lead role in this drama, it will be the first in two years since his last role in “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes”. He previously worked with network MBC four years ago, in 2016’s “Shopping King Louie”.
Seo In Guk. (The Celuv)Seo In Guk competed in Mnet’s singing contest “Superstar K” in 2009 where he won the first season of the show. This meant that he got to release his own album and make it into the music industry. This was after repeatedly getting rejected by entertainment agencies at auditions, and told to lose weight. The fame from winning the show was not all good though, as rumors of him having done plastic surgery started circulating as well as getting “cold shoulder” from Korean networks for their music shows, as he was a winner from a different Korean network’s music show.
After getting a minor role in 2013’s “Master’s Sun”, he went on to land a big-screen leading role in coming-of-age film “No Breathing”. He then headlined romantic comedy series “High School King of Savvy” in 2014, after which he played a crown prince Gwanghae in the period drama “The King’s Face”.
Seo In Guk rose to acclaim in 2016 after starring in OCN’s “Squad 38”, which became the highest-rated drama for the network, and bagged Seo a special award for his role at the 11th Asian TV Drama Conference. He would then go on to land leading roles in dramas like “Shopaholic Louis”, and 2018’s “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes”.
