The Vampire Diaries has been canceled after eighth season, and the fans just cannot digest the fact that it will not return anytime soon. Well, it has multiple reasons, and one of them is that the show was aired on The CW and then released on Netflix. The show is still available on Netflix, and thus a lot of people are watching the show during this quarantine time and then trying to know whether there will be more episodes or not. Thus, the ninth season is getting more and more attention, although it does not even exist.
So, it is pretty obvious that there will not be any Vampire Diaries season 9 episode 1 coming out. The show was renewed for the eighth season on 11 March 2016, but later on, on 23 July 2016, it was confirmed that the show will not be renewed for a ninth season. So, everyone knew that the 16-episode-long eighth season will he the last, which premiered on 21 October 2016, and ended on 10 March 2017. The last season had the least episode, as the show usually had 22 episodes per season!

One of the reasons for cancellations could be the dropping viewership, as the US Nielsen rankings show that the show had gradually decreasing viewership till the sixth season, which rose in seventh season and then again dropped for the final season. Hence, the closure was justified for the Vampire Diaries.
The show also had spin-offs, named The Originals, and The Originals: The Awakening. However, none of them lasted long, as The Originals concluded on 1 August 2018 with its it’s fifth season was the last.
The Vampire Diaries Season 9 Episode 1 update
As we talked earlier, there are no sources that confirm whether there will be a season 9 or not, so season 9 episode 1 is also a no-no! However, we can expect that the fans can convince The CW, or any other network to intervene and order another season! But it will not happen instantly, and till now, there is no such details coming out. So, we will say that it’s curtains down for The Vampire Diaries for now, and we will be waiting if there’s more to the story!
