Also, Kadokawa will release the Heaven Burns Red Comic Anthology on September 27, which consists of stories from eight manga creators, including Juri Misaki and Sakaki Yoshioka, with a cover illustration by P Goto. The game itself, Heaven Burns Red, initially launched in February 2022, marking Jun Maeda’s return to game development after a hiatus of 13 years. The game’s release experienced several delays, shifting from its original 2020 launch window for iOS and Android devices.

All About Heaven Burns Red
Heaven Burns Red is a free-to-play mobile action game jointly created by WFS, Inc. and Key. Debiting on February 10, 2022, for iOS and Android platforms exclusively in Japan, the game carries the creative touch of Jun Maeda, marking his return as the main scenario writer after 15 years since “Little Busters!” (2007). Also a Windows version has also been launched on Steam for PC players.
Key and WFS brought us this project as they are credited with the original concept. Maeda gives the main scenario for the game, and the visual and character designs, handled by Yuugen, draw inspiration from the imaginative minds of Na-Ga, Fumuyun, and Maroyaka. Maeda also produces the game’s music with the vocal talents of Nagi Yanagi.
The Plot of the Game
In the story “Heaven Burns Red,” Earth is under attack by extraterrestrial creatures called “Cancer.” These beings are impervious to traditional weaponry, driving humanity to evacuate most of the planet’s surface. With time running out, humanity develops a specialized weapon called “Seraph” to counter the Cancer threat.
To wield Seraphs effectively, the “Seraph Corps” is formed, comprising girls who possess the ability to manipulate and operate these weapons. Ruka Kayamori, one of these gifted girls, is thrown into the battle against the Cancer, becoming a key part of the fight for Earth’s survival.
To celebrate its 1st anniversary, the game joined forces with Jun Maeda’s fan-favorite Angel Beats! franchise. This special event, titled “Place Where The Cosmos Continued to Bloom,” took place on February 2, 2023. The event introduced three characters from Angel Beats!: Yuri Nakamura, Kanade Tachibana, and Miyuki Irie.
In this collaborative storyline, Unit 1A found itself in an unfamiliar location, later revealed to be the underground base of the SSS. Irrespective of the new setting, they retained their Seraph weapons. Players had the chance to acquire SS Style Yuri and Kanade characters through a time-limited gacha, while S Style Miyuki could be obtained by exchanging event tokens.
The Gameplay
You start the game as Ruka Kayamori, once a renowned vocalist and guitarist for the legendary band “She is Legend.” As the newly embodied Ruka, you’ll live a day-to-day life and meet new characters as the story unfolds. The game features monthly events with side stories told from other character’s perspectives.
This turn-based RPG lets you build a team of 6 from 48 available girls to combat extraterrestrial foes called Cancer. In battles, you choose 3 characters to perform actions like attacking or healing. Characters and Cancer have Deflectors (DF) acting as shields that can be healed; if a character’s DF breaks, their HP can’t be healed. The story is presented in a voiced visual novel style.
