The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 has won some mixed reactions so far, while some fans have called it a snooze fest, failing to live up to expectations of what it promised, some of the fans think the resistance has started to build up with episode 5. Must warn you of spoilers at this point. If spoilers don’t bother you, please give it a read.
In the previous episode, we saw how Luke received a call from June (she was forced to place him a call) asking for him and Nicole to see the Waterfords. While Luke declined to meet Fred, he agreed on Serena. This was followed by Serena visiting Luke, carrying a package from June, an audio cassette that June had recorded for Luke. Although we weren’t shown the part as to how Serena managed to pass on the tape to Luke after it was still in her bag, on a flight back to Gilead, we prefer not to think deep into it, remember this is a show that’s selling reproduction as a national resource. At the end of the episode, the Waterfords were seen conniving for the peaceful return of Nicole back to Gilead, as she’s the child of Gilead (not them). In the next episode, we are shown how Waterfords will diplomatically try to bring baby Nicole back to Gilead through a series of pressure-increasing tactics. Long story short, Serena has flip-flopped again, she wants Nicole back in her home and minds you the Waterfords will leave no stone unturned to just do that.
Given that Nicole is currently with Luke, and as Serena Joy turned on June at the last second, maybe Luke will end up losing the baby after all. June was seen June (played by Elisabeth Moss) paraded onto a stage to make a public plea to Canada and citizens of the world. While she didn’t say anything, neither did Serena, only Fred spoke.
Yvonne, who plays Serena on the shoe, has called this twist awful. In episode 2, 3 and 4, we saw June plant an idea into Serena’s head that she could be the strong, powerful woman again, that she could be a part of the resistance. But after she saw Nicole, she lost her reason as to why she gave her away in the first place. It’s overwhelming for her as a mother, although not biologically.
This could very well mean that Luke’s (O. T. Fagbenle) life is at risk, as he has no blood ties to the baby. Here check out the teaser for episode 6
