The Plot
At the heart of Komada – A Whisky Family lies Rui Komada, the determined young leader of her family’s struggling whisky distillery. Following her father’s passing, Rui steps into her role amidst financial struggles, familial rifts, and the aftermath of a natural calamity.
With a plan in mind, she shoulders the responsibility of rejuvenating both the distillery’s fortunes and the fractured relationships within her family. Rui’s mission? To breathe life back into their iconic Japanese whisky, forging a path toward unity and restoration.
P.A. Works’ “workplace” series commenced in 2010 with “Hana-Saku Iroha,” immersing audiences in the world of a hot spring inn. The journey continued in 2014 with “Shirobako,” shedding light on the intricate workings of the anime industry, later releasing a sequel film in 2020. “Sakura Quest,” making its debut in 2017, followed the lives of young women navigating small-town tourism.
The latest addition, “The Aquatope on White Sand” (2021), dived into the challenges and wonders of the aquarium business. Each installment in this “workplace” theme created a distinct vibe of dedication, dreams, and the myriad facets of work and passion. We’re sure Komada- A Whisky Family will be no less than anything we’ve seen.
With strong determination, curiosity, and a thirst for the truth, Rui sets out to rediscover the secrets of her family’s signature whisky. From the rolling hills of barley fields to the age-old barrels tucked away in a forgotten cellar, she learns what made her family business and how she can rebuild it from the scraps.
As the art of whisky-making reflects the intricate and troubled relationships within her family, every drop becomes a metaphor for the reforging of bonds long broken, or so we hope!
