2022 has come up with a new supernatural film for its horror fans, The Invitation. Jessica Thompson’s The Invitation is inspired by Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula, published in 1897. It is co-written with Blair Butler. Emile Gladstone is its producer. The movie was released this Friday, August 26, 2022, and the review for The Invitation are so far a bit mixed.
‘The Invitation’ was initially ‘The Bride’, but the scheduling conflicts of the production team, including Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert, led to the film being taken forward with a new team and hence the new title. The film stars the Fast & Furious actress Nathalie Emmanuel and the Scottish actor and singer Thomas Anthony Doherty as the lead. So, in this article, we will go through The Invitation’s horror and review how far the movie is worth giving a look at. So let’s begin.
About The Invitation
The Invitation is Jessica M. Thompson’s American supernatural horror film starring Nathalie Emmanuel as the female protagonist. Sony Pictures Releasing released it on August 26, 2022 (Friday). Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula (1897) is its inspiration.
The Star Cast
The Invitation stars Nathalie Emmanuel as a struggling artist and an orphan, Evelyn Jackson (or simply Evie), along with Thomas Doherty as Walter in the lead roles. Other significant actors include Stephanie Corneliussen as Viktoria, Alana Boden as Lucy, Courtney Taylor as Evie’s best friend, Grace, Hugh Skinner as Oliver (Evie’s cousin), and Sean Pertwee as Mr. Field (a butler).
An orphan artist, Evie is living peacefully by working as a waitress in a catering company in New York City with her best friend, Grace. Grace steals a few “swag bags” from her job place that contains some ancestry DNA kits. They both send the kit for testing and learn that Evie, who craves the love of a family, owns an extensive family in England. She is even gets a message from her cousin, Oliver Alexander, and they meet.
Oliver invites her to an upcoming family wedding as one of the maids of honor along with Viktoria and Lucy. He also informs her about her origin from a family scandal and that she is from the family of a footman and their great-grandmother, Emmaline Alexander. Unaware of the upcoming dark consequences, eager Evie accepts the invitation.
Evie arrives at her gorgeous estate in the English countryside with Grace and crushes on the handsome lord of the manor, Walter Deville. However, the butler, Mr. Field, seems unhappy. Moreover, in the continuously pouring love of the family, Evie fails to smell something fishy happening around her.
The new maids go missing, Evie gets nightmares of her great-grandmother, Emmaline’s suicide, her maid Mrs. Smith is in constant nervousness, ghostly figures appear in her room, and the bride and groom are nowhere to be seen.
Later while having dinner, Walter announces his wedding with Evie. And this is the point of unveiling hidden intentions. Walter is exposed as a Vampire. The three families in the ceremony gathered to marry their girls as Walter’s wives for power and prosperity. Lucy and Viktoria are Walter’s existing vampire brides. They take Evie down to prepare her for nuptial consequences the following day.
And from here, the run and chase begin. Evie almost escapes the place but is brought back to the mansion. After exchanging vows, the next day, Evie bites Walter’s arm, consumes his blood to become a half-vampire, and stabs him.
Towards the end, Evie runs with other maids to escape, kills Mr. Field and the old Vampire, and escapes the burning mansion. However, the closing scenes display Evie back as a normal human being. But now she chases Oliver entering Alexander Realty and vows revenge on him.
The Invitation review
The Invitation is released theatrically on August 26, 2022, in the United States. It made $2.6 million on its first day. Also, it has grossed $8.6 million worldwide. The critics are, however, giving mixed reviews for the story and performances.
Despite the average review for the film, the film is moderately good. And the story is quite predictable, but the characters and the actors are refreshing. The GOT actress Nathalie did a good job as Evie and made a remarkable presence. The Invitation is a Dracula story with a twist. Its intensity is built from the beginning itself. This is evident from the background scores and the light effects throughout the filming.
The buildup of suspense and dark themes is appreciable. However, the early revealed suspense dilutes the impact of horror like modern horror blockbusters. The film also presents some social issues in a likable manner.
Overall with a positive review, The Invitation is a good movie worth watching once to enjoy an old-style horror. Also, below is the official trailer of The Invitation.
