The Plot
The somber and slow decay of wilting petals reminds Bocchan, the young duke, of the lethal touch he possesses, isolating him from the world. Alienated by his family, he finds peace and comfort in the company of his loyal butler Rob and spirited maid Alice within the confines of the manor.
As affection for Alice blossoms, so does his determination to break free from the curse that haunts his existence, not just for himself, but to finally feel the touch of his beloved, Alice.
The Duke of Death and His Maid is produced by J.C. Staff and directed by Yoshinobu Yamakawa. The series’ scripts are written by Hideki Shirane, character design is handled by Michiru Kuwabata and Gen Okuda and Takeshi Watanabe compose the music.
After Sony acquired Crunchyroll, the series was relocated to the platform, for a larger audience to access the series. Plus Media Network Asia secured the licensing rights for Southeast Asia and broadcasted the first season on Aniplus Asia.
Meanwhile, Medialink obtained the licensing rights for Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau, and is streaming the series on their YouTube channel, Ani-One Asia.
Worth a Watch?
The Duke of Death and His Maid’s relatively short 12-episode run, the anime impressively attempts to delve into character dynamics, though it becomes clear that the source material’s extensive 190+ chapters cannot be fully covered within this period.
However, due to the limited number of episodes, the several characters aren’t fully developed, serving mostly as background players.
Initially hesitant about the CGI elements used in the animation, viewers found that the overall quality of the show was not sacrificed. That being said, the traditional animation style would’ve done more for the anime. On the other hand, the character design for Alice is attractive; the gothic maid design acts as a form of fan service.
The Duke of Death and His Maid remains an engaging watch with humorous moments, sexy character designs, and a charmingly unique storyline.
