Playmobil: The Movie Performed Poorly At Box Office and Here Is Why
The success of a Toy movie is highly unpredictable. Surprisingly, there is a high number of animated or action movies based on toys. Some movies go superhit like The Lego movie, whereas some movies face loss such as Playmobil, which had on if the worst opening of all time.
The movie was released on the 6th of December, 2019and was based on German building toys. The Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe has lent his voice to a lead role Rex Dasher along with other famous voice casts. However, this contributed very little, and the movie could not make a good opening at the box office. The movie made $670,000 at the domestic box office after releasing it on the 6th. The movie hit 2,337 theatres and had a per-screen average income of $287.
The per-screen average of $287 tells how poor the opening has been. The per-screen average of Frozen 2 was $7974. Joker, which has been out for ten weekends, had a per-screen average of $1088. Some movies with low per-screen averages include Charlie’s Angels with $304 and Ad Astra with $303. No one has been so low as Playmobil.
By rank, it is put the fourth position for having the worst movie opening that has been released in over 2000 theatres. It is just slightly better than Jem and Holograms.
There are various reasons why Playmobil has performed so poorly. Firstly, the movie did not get popular. With the Lego movie, there were posters out, but people didn’t even know about Playmobil. Playmobil is not even a big franchise like Barbie or Transformers, so it couldn’t get much attention. Secondly, the rating was very low, with 19% from Rotten Tomatoes, B+ in Cinemascore, and 4.5/10 rating on IMDb. So the buzz required wasn’t obtained. Other reasons include that the movie got released too wisely that it should have been, and it felt like a home release rather than a theatre release and couldn’t compete with movies like Frozen 2.
