Prince William, previously known as Duke of Cambridge, assumed the title of Prince of Wales following the passing of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, in 2022. Alongside his wife Catherine, who is now referred to as Princess of Wales, Prince William has embraced the responsibility of representing and serving the Welsh population.
Throughout his long-standing commitment to the royal family, Prince William has actively fulfilled his duties by involving in public engagements, assuming patronages, and serving in the British military.
Nevertheless, with his new role as the representative of the Welsh people, a royal commentator suggested that Prince William has been somewhat lacking in fulfilling his duties associated with Wales. According to the expert, there is no need for him to catch up and provide support to the Welsh community, just as his father, King Charles (formerly the Prince of Wales) did in the past.
According to royal expert Sir Huw Thomas, Prince William, aged 40, is not as active as his father, King Charles III, in fulfilling his duties as Prince of Wales. During a recent speaking engagement Sir Huw Thomas, who also served as the royal physician to the late Queen Elizabeth II, stated that King Charles III was the most dedicated and attentive Prince of Wales in history.
Prince William is reportedly falling in his duties to the Welsh people
After the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s mourning period, Prince William and Kate embarked on one of their initial royal visits to Wales, aiming to establish a connection with the local population. Kate’s memorable appearance in a vibrant red coat conveyed a sense of assurance in her new role.
Nonetheless, a royal expert believes that Prince William is currently falling behind in his obligations to the Welsh people and faces the challenge of living up to the significant legacy left by his father.
The royal author Huw Thomas, renowned for his book “Charles: The King and Wales,” expressed his opinion that Prince William is falling behind in his duties. In an interview with Express, Thomas stated that William has a significant amount of ground to cover in terms of public perception of him as Prince of Wales.
He also mentioned his belief that there might be a notable increase in William’s involvement with Wales after the Coronation, which could potentially reshape their relationship. The future remains uncertain, and only time will reveal what unfolds.
After King Charles’ coronation on May 6, there is an expectation that Prince William will make a determined effort to garner support from the Welsh people, as suggested by royal expert Huw Thomas. While William has numerous royal responsibilities, including preparing for his future role as king, it is conceivable that Kate Middleton may assume a more prominent role in engaging with the Welsh people.
However, if Charles managed to balance both the role of Prince of Wales and the future king, there is no reason to believe that William could not do the same. The timing of the Prince and Princess of Wales’ return to Wales remains uncertain, but Thomas believes that Williams’s initiative in Wales will likely prioritize mental health, an area of interest in that both William and Kate have been actively involved for some time.
Prince William is now the Prince of Wales
William’s royal title has undergone a series of changes throughout his life. As the son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, who held the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, William was initially known as Prince William. However, upon his marriage to Kate Middleton, his title expanded to include the additional designation of the Duke of Cambridge.
Together Willam and Kate assumed the titles of Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. When their children were born, they also inherited prince and princess titles as part of their royal lineage.
