Fans of the Fox series 9-1-1: Lone Star will be disappointed to hear that the spinoff has been canceled. The network confirmed that the show’s upcoming fifth season, set to premiere on September 23, will be its final one.
The series stars Rob Lowe as fire captain Owen Strand, a 9/11 survivor who relocates from New York City to Austin, Texas, to rebuild Station 118 after it loses all but one firefighter in a tragic blaze.
Ronen Rubinstein co-stars as Owen’s son, TK, a paramedic who married his longtime partner Carlos (played by Rafael L. Silva) in the Season 4 finale.
In Season 5, Carlos, a policeman, is tasked with solving the murder of his father Gabriel (portrayed by Benito Martinez), a Texas Ranger who was shot and killed in his home just before the wedding.
Before the cancellation news, executive producer Rashad Raisani had expressed optimism for a Season 6 renewal but admitted to TheWrap that he “wasn’t holding my breath” for it to happen.
The cast and crew approached the Season 5 wrap party as a potential farewell, Raisani revealed.
“Because of the strikes and the pandemic, the show never had a proper end-of-season wrap party.
So for Season 5, we finally had one, and it had the vibe of a farewell. Everyone knew, on that last night of filming, this could be it.”
He reflected on the final shoot, saying, “We were filming a scene about the family and how it might get broken up, so it was especially emotional.
Everyone had this sense that it could be the end, and they were just trying to enjoy and appreciate the time they had together.”
As for the final season, Raisani remarked, “Creatively, I think it’s as strong as ever. At the very least, we’ve maintained the bar we’ve set.”
9-1-1: Lone Star also stars Gina Torres, Jim Parrack, Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, Brianna Baker, and Julian Works.
Sierra McClain, who portrayed 9-1-1 operator Grace Ryder, exited the series prior to its final season. Meanwhile, the original 9-1-1 series has found success at its new home on ABC.
After being dropped by Fox, the series was picked up by the alphabet network and delivered strong ratings last season. New episodes are set to return on September 26.
