YuruYuri, the manga series, debuted in Comic Yuri Hime S in June 2008 and later moved to Comic Yuri Hime in September 2010. It underwent an indefinite hiatus from July 2018 to January 2019 but gained significant popularity, selling over a million copies by December 2011. An English version was available on JManga but not for long due to the platform’s closure.
A related manga, Reset!, started in July 2010 but went on hiatus after four issues. A web manga spin-off called Ōmuro-ke, centered on the Ohmuro sisters, was released on Niconico Seiga. Additionally, a parody isekai spin-off titled Tensei Shitara Akari dake Slime Datta Ken was announced in April 2020, while a prequel spin-off named Touzainanboku! Focused on the teachers began releasing in July 2020.
The Anime’s Timeline
The Yuruyuri manga birthed three successful television anime seasons, all of which were streamed by Crunchyroll during their airing. The manga’s popularity also led to the creation of the Yuruyuri Nachu Yachumi! Original video anime, followed by a two-episode sequel titled Yuruyuri Nachu Yachumi!+.
To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the manga inspired an original video anime project in November 2019, with the introduction of the Miniyuri net anime in September of the same year.
The Plot of YuruYuri
Set in the fictional Nanamori Middle School in Takaoka, Toyama, the series follows the daily escapades of the Amusement Club, led by Akari Akaza, alongside her childhood pals Kyōko Toshinō and Yui Funami and classmate Chinatsu Yoshikawa. The ensemble also includes the quirky Student Council members.
Adapted from Namori’s slice-of-life manga, Yuru Yuri is a whimsical comedy centered on a clique of girls bonding over tea and adoration, hilariously oblivious to the apparent main character, Akari, amidst their antics.
The Ōmuro-ke manga is set in the familiar world of the original manga “YuruYuri.” The spin-off follows the lives of the Oomuro sisters, centering on Hanako and Nadeshiko. While you might initially be apprehensive due to the lack of Kyouko, the story quickly proves its charm, showing us the endearing dynamics among the sisters. If you liked the YuruYuri series, the Ōmuro-ke is a must-read.
