The John Wick franchise, already a major success, is set to grow even further with the addition of an anime and a new TV show, distinct from the prequel series, The Continental.
Chad Stahelski, the director of all four John Wick films, shared this exciting news in an upcoming episode of The Discourse podcast, as reported by The Playlist.
He highlighted the potential of television as a medium to further explore the expansive John Wick universe, particularly through a new TV show focusing on The High Table, under development by Lionsgate.
Stahelski also confirmed that this upcoming series is entirely separate from The Continental. He expressed enthusiasm for several characters from the latest film, John Wick: Chapter 4, specifically mentioning Donnie Yen, Rina Sawayama, and Shamier Anderson’s character, the Tracker.
He indicated that the new TV show and other related projects would provide opportunities to delve deeper into the richly detailed world of John Wick, extending beyond the central character.
Notably, Donnie Yen has shown interest in a spinoff centered on his character, Caine, raising further possibilities for the franchise’s expansion.
Stahelski revealed additional plans for the John Wick universe, including the development of a Japanese anime. His passion for anime shines through this decision, aiming to bring unique stories to life in a way that complements the existing narrative and visual style of the franchise.
The expansion of the John Wick universe is not limited to new formats and characters. Despite the seeming conclusion in John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate is investing in various projects within this universe. One such project is the Ana de Armas-led spinoff, Ballerina, slated for release on June 7, 2024.
Furthermore, there are early-stage plans for John Wick 5. John Wick producer Basil Iwanyk shared that while the film is definitely in the works, the storyline is still being developed following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4.
Iwanyk emphasized the studio and creative team’s commitment to a thoughtful and strategic approach in developing the next installment, focusing on quality storytelling rather than rushing the production.
For more insights into the ever-evolving John Wick universe, including reviews and discussions about The Continental and other related projects, fans, and enthusiasts can look forward to more detailed coverage and analysis.
