The FBOY Island NZ casting dispute has drawn attention to the proper social function of public broadcasters. How could TVNZ have overlooked the background of competitor Wayde Moore’s severe criminal charges about his conduct with a teenager? Furthermore, how was a show like this ever commissioned?
TVNZ has commissioning editors who receive bids from people who want to develop shows, according to NZ Herald senior writer David Fisher, who spoke with the Front Page podcast. Keep reading to know more about where they are now and how the scandal started.
How the Scandal Started
The Herald on Sunday disclosed that 26-year-old candidate Wayde Moore from Boy Boy Island showed up in court last year on charges of choking a lady he said police enticed to his house because he wanted to have sex with her while she was intoxicated.
Then, when Moore called for assistance, she covered her nose and mouth to be silent. The accusation of suffocation against him was deemed unfounded.
However, district court judge Noel Sainsbury declared that his actions were “deeply inappropriate and disrespectful” because they targeted a woman who was intoxicated and defenseless.
That evening, Moore’s roommates were interviewed by The Herald. Once he heard the woman yelling “no” repeatedly—first aloud and then “like screaming through a pillow”—the first one stepped in. “The sound was muffled and very loud. “Help, help, help, help, help, help, help, help, help,” she could be heard saying.”
Moore stated that he was “really drunk” that day, that he had lost his job due to COVID-19, and that he was distraught over his parents divorcing at the time. “I needed someone because I was emotionally unstable at the time.”
How TVNZ Responded
On Monday, TVNZ revealed that although Moore will not appear in the show, it would still premiere. “Following conversations with all parties, we have decided it is in the best interests of all involved to remove him as a contestant from the show and promotion.”
The 19-year-old girl told the Herald today that she was pleased TVNZ had taken notice and was taking him down. “He does not deserve to be publicly put out there.”
Moore did not advance in the program and had little impact on the show, according to a contestant with whom the Herald spoke.
The organization added that in order to make sure casting procedures are as “robust as possible,” they were examining them and collaborating with Warner Bros., the production firm.
Later that week, the Herald reported that Moore withheld his court record from the competition, even though the candidates were asked whether anything from their past might have a negative impact on the network, production firm, or show.
TVNZ to Remove FBOY Island NZ Contestant
After it became known that Wayde Moore had been charged with suffocation during a sex encounter last year, TVNZ decided to remove Moore from the upcoming dating series FBOY Island NZ.
Moore showed up in court after luring a drunken woman home with the intention of having intercourse with her, then covering her mouth as she tried to yell for assistance.
A TVNZ spokeswoman stated, “After speaking with all parties, we have determined that eliminating him as a contestant from the show and promotion is in the best interests of everyone involved.”
The woman at the center of the incident earlier told the NZ Herald that Moore’s involvement “doesn’t promote the changes we need to make” and that the show glorified behavior that puts women in danger. It encourages inappropriate sexual behavior.
Three ladies on FBOY Island are assigned to date a sizable group of unmarried males, half of whom identify as “nice guys” and the other half as “F boys.” A $100,000 reward is up for grabs, so the women get to know the men and try to figure out what they want. Along the way, they eliminate competitors.
Which Fboy Island Couples is Still Together?
For Molly and Nick, it was all set long before the show even concluded, and in the months that have passed since the conclusion of filming, the two have stayed strong and are still together!
We had been waiting for a happy ending following Molly’s traumatic history. Molly revealed the adultery she experienced in her previous relationship early in the episode, saying that she’s experienced the most “effed up” thing that can happen, so this should be easy.
Molly is searching for someone with whom she can break down her barriers and regain her trust because of her past.
