Jo Koy, a relatively last-minute first-time Golden Globes host, struggled to get people to laugh during his monologue on Sunday night’s 2024 awards show.
Speaking to the star-studded crowd at the Beverly Hilton, he said that he started the job ten days ago and asked if the audience desired the ideal monologue.
“I wrote some of these, and those are the ones you’re laughing at,” said Koy, who was announced as the host on December 21, acknowledging the variety of jokes he delivered, some written by him and others by other writers. In response to a joke that received only a mediocre reception, he joked, “That’s hilarious, I don’t care.”
Netizens react to Jo Koy’s monologue
Social media users responded quickly to Jo Koy’s monologue, with one commenting that, as a Filipino American, it was like watching a car crash and that he looked like he was about to have an aneurysm. One other viewer described it as the stage equivalent of a comedian’s nightmare.
While Jo Koy is a fantastic comedian, NPR’s Eric Deggans offered a tactful criticism, pointing out that he might not be used to hosting the #GoldenGlobes in front of a showbiz audience.
Deggans observed that the monologue was a little too cutting while also lacking the necessary certitude. It seemed that the hosting job was harder than it looked.
Jo Koy’s monologue was a cheerful approach
Even so, the Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy’s monologue was probably less uncomfortable than the one at the previous year’s ceremony, when host Jerrod Carmichael awkwardly attacked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Koy chose a cheerful approach that is more in line with his humorous, family-oriented approach, subtly making fun of the A-list attendees.
Among his jokes were lighthearted comments about “Oppenheimer,” indicating his admiration for the program while also arguing that it deserved an additional hour. He joked that Robert De Niro’s final performance was his best and made a humorous personal goal to finish watching “Oppenheimer” by 2025. He also made fun of his ability to become a father again at the age of 80.
Along the way, Koy addressed a variety of subjects, jokingly bringing up “white people,” assuming everything in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and cracking jokes about Meghan Markle’s Netflix earnings.
He made fun of Kevin Costner’s unusual appearance by saying that he usually hangs out with a cow on a mountain. He also made a playful allusion to the television program “Saltburn” and made fun of Barry Keoghan’s physique by emphasizing it as the real star.
One particularly funny joke made a clever connection between “The Colour Purple” and the prescription drug Ozempic. All in all, Jo Koy’s monologue struck a lighter and more upbeat note than it did the year before.
Jo Koy hosted the Globes for the second time ever
Jo Koy, known for his five Comedy Central and Netflix comedy specials, just finished his Funny is Funny World Tour and is currently pursuing what might be his most prominent role as the host of the Golden Globes. Koy, who is 52 years old, hosts the Globes for the second time ever; the first Asian host was Sandra Oh in 2019.
Before the show, Koy spoke with the Associated Press, expressing his excitement and recognizing the importance of the occasion, saying, “This is a beautiful moment.” I want to make sure that I do this absolutely brilliantly. We must begin to take action now. This is precisely that. We are now proceeding. You ensure that it doesn’t happen again by taking lessons from the past.”
On Sunday night, the 2024 Golden Globe winners were revealed. Multiple awards were given to films like Oppenheimer, Barbie, Poor Things, and Anatomy of a Fall. Christopher Nolan won the directing prize for his work on the movie Oppenheimer, which was recognized as the best drama motion picture.
The Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture in the Comedy or Musical Genre went to Poor Things. Anatomy of a Fall won the prize for best non-English film, and The Boy and the Heron won the prize for best animated picture.
