Christina Applegate made a surprise appearance at the 2024 Emmy Awards on Monday despite her battle with multiple sclerosis.
The former “Married With Children” star, 52, received a heartfelt standing ovation from the audience when she joined host Anthony Anderson on stage. Wearing a stunning red gown and using a cane, Applegate presented the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series to Ayo Edebiri for “The Bear.”
While walking up to the stage, Applegate lightened the mood by joking that her body was “not by Ozempic.” After Edebiri accepted her award, the “Sweetest Thing” actress introduced comedy legend Carol Burnett.
Applegate publicly disclosed her MS diagnosis in 2021 while filming her Netflix series “Dead To Me.” In a 2022 interview with Variety, she shared the challenges of being diagnosed during filming, experiencing numbness in her toes and feet, falling over, and relying on a wheelchair to reach distant sets.
By February 2023, Applegate hinted that her appearance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards might be her last as an actor, stating, “It’s my last awards show as an actor probably, so it’s kind of a big deal.”
Christina Applegate rocked her 2024 Emmy Awards look
Wearing a sophisticated burgundy velvet gown by Christian Siriano with peplum detail, Applegate presented the Best Supporting Actress award to Ayo Edebiri. Her blond hair was styled in a bouncy blowout, and she accessorized with two long gold pendant necklaces.
Last year, at the SAG Awards, she rocked a chic Christian Siriano tux dress and a bedazzled cane with “FU MS” on it. Applegate has been vocal about her defiance against MS, designing a stylish black-and-white cane for mobility aid brand Neo Walk with a “FU MS” collar and tag. She also sported the same message on her nails during her 2022 Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.
At the Emmys, Applegate was nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in the Netflix comedy, marking her 8th Emmy nomination. However, she lost to Quinta Brunson.
Despite multiple nominations for “Dead to Me” and “Samantha Who?,” her only Emmy win was for her guest appearance on “Friends” in 2003 as Jennifer Aniston’s character Rachel Green’s sister.
