The first trailer for Blitz, a World War Two film directed by Sir Steve McQueen, offers a look at how locations in Hull were used to replicate 1940s London.
The film follows the story of George, portrayed by Elliott Heffernan, a determined nine-year-old boy, and his mother Rita, played by Saoirse Ronan, as she attempts to send him to safety.
Filming took place in February 2023, with Hull locations transformed to reflect the era, featuring vintage red buses, 1940s posters, and period-appropriate street furniture.
The trailer showcases parts of Hull’s Old Town and Paragon railway station.
In recent years, Hull has earned the nickname “Hullywood” due to its use in productions like The Crown and Enola Holmes 2, which featured locations such as High Street and Queen Victoria Square.
Blitz also employed local extras and actors from East Yorkshire.
Sir Steve McQueen’s previous works include 12 Years a Slave, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Occupied City, a documentary about Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation.
Blitz will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on 9 October and will be released in cinemas on 1 November. It will also be available for streaming on Apple TV starting 22 November.
