The BBC has revealed the trailer for Mr Loverman, an eight-part series produced by Fable Pictures (known for Hullraisers, Rocks, Wild Rose, Stan & Ollie).
Adapted for television by Nathaniel Price (The Outlaws, Noughts + Crosses), the series is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Booker Prize-winning author Bernardine Evaristo.
All episodes of Mr Loverma will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer starting at 6am on Monday, October 14. The first two episodes will also air on BBC One that evening at 9pm, with subsequent episodes continuing to air weekly.
The story follows Barrington Jedidiah Walker, known as Barry to his friends, a vibrant 74-year-old Antiguan-born man who is a beloved figure in Hackney, recognized for his impeccable fashion sense and love of retro suits. Barry’s wife of 50 years, Carmel, suspects that he has been unfaithful with other women.
However, she is unaware of the truth: Barry has been engaged in a secret, long-term love affair with his best friend and true soulmate, Morris.
As Barry faces the later years of his life, he is confronted with decisions that will force his entire family to re-evaluate their futures.
Mr Loverman brings to life Bernardine Evaristo’s ground-breaking novel, which explores the experiences of Britain’s older Caribbean community. It is a heartwarming story about family, love, and self-acceptance.
Lennie James (Save Me, Line of Duty) stars as the charismatic lead character, Barrington Jedidiah Walker. Three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D. Clarke (Doctor Who, Informer) portrays his wife Carmel Walker. Ariyon Bakare (Life, His Dark Materials) plays Morris De La Roux, Barrington’s best friend and lover.
Tamara Lawrance (Get Millie Black, Time Series 2) and Sharlene Whyte (Small Axe, Stephen) portray the couple’s daughters, Maxine and Donna. Tahj Miles (Small Axe, Death in Paradise) takes on the role of Daniel, Donna’s son and Barrington’s grandson.
Mr Loverman (8×30’) is adapted by Nathaniel Price and directed by Hong Khaou (Alice & Jack, Baptiste, Lilting, Monsoon). Irma Inniss (Grime Kids, The Bay) serves as the producer.
The series is executive produced by Faye Ward, Hannah Farrell, and Hannah Price for Fable Pictures, along with Jo McClellan for the BBC.
Lennie James and Hong Khaou are also executive producers, with Nathaniel Price serving as associate producer. Fable Pictures is backed by Sony Pictures Television, which will handle the series’ international distribution.
