The Scary Movie reboot, announced earlier at CinemaCon, is finally moving forward, with the original creators reuniting after 18 years to bring a new screenplay to life.
Known for parodying horror classics like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, the rebooted Scary Movie is set to begin filming next year and will have a theatrical release. The Wayans brothers, along with Rick Alvarez, are on board as writers and producers.
The Scary Movie franchise was developed by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans, with Keenen writing and directing the first two installments, while Marlon and Shawn wrote and starred in them.
Miramax President Jonathan Glickman expressed excitement about the reunion, saying, “We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise.
The timing is perfect to bring back the series to the big screen, and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences around the world.”
The Wayans brothers shared their enthusiasm, stating, “We couldn’t be more excited to be part of the new Scary Movie and to work together again.
This is a franchise we created over 20 years ago, and we remember audiences laughing in the aisles. We hope to see that happen again and look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
The Scary Movie series, during its original early 2000s run, earned over $896 million worldwide across five films.
The first film, released in 2000, achieved a record-breaking R-rated horror opening of $42.5 million, making it one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror comedies of its time and setting a milestone for Black directors.
This Scary Movie reboot is part of Paramount Pictures’ first-look deal with Miramax, which is producing the film while Paramount manages worldwide distribution. Becky Sloviter, President of Miramax Motion Picture Group, is overseeing the project.
Beyond Scary Movie, Marlon Wayans will star in Justin Tipping’s upcoming psychological sports thriller HIM, produced by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, scheduled for release in September 2025.
Marlon is currently on his Wild Child Tour nationwide. He is represented by 3 Arts Entertainment, UTA, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes. Shawn Wayans is also represented by Yorn, Levine.
Rick Alvarez, who has collaborated with Marlon Wayans on films like Fifty Shades of Black, Sextuplets, and Naked, is also represented by 3 Arts and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner, Endlich, Goodell & Gellman.
