Following the success of his acclaimed Netflix documentary Will & Harper, which goes into his close relationship with transgender former SNL writer Harper Steele, Will Ferrell is embarking on a new project titled Street Justice, a comedy he’ll both produce and star in for 20th Century Studios.
The film, an original concept from Dave Callaham, features Ferrell as a “Dirty Harry”-style character who takes the law into his own hands, according to sources.
Peter Atencio, a comedy director who is currently finishing work on Legendary’s live-action/animation hybrid Animal Friends, will helm the film.
Callaham, known for writing Shang-Chi and the Oscar-nominated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, wrote the script on spec, which was reportedly sold in a large seven-figure deal.
He will also serve as an executive producer. Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum will produce the film through Gloria Sanchez Productions, with David Koplan joining as a producer.
This project reunites Callaham and Atencio, who previously worked together on the action-comedy series Jean-Claude Van Johnson for Prime Video, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Fresh off roles in comedies like the Oscar-winning Barbie, Strays, and the Emmy-winning TV movie Quiz Lady, Ferrell will next appear alongside Reese Witherspoon in the wedding comedy You’re Cordially Invited, directed by Nick Stoller and debuting on Prime Video on January 30.
Ferrell also stars in the upcoming Netflix comedy series Golf, which he co-created with Ramy Youssef and Josh Rabinowitz.
Additionally, his documentary Will & Harper, which he produced and co-stars in, has been nominated for a Cinema Eye Honors Award and four Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards since its September release.
Atencio, before his work on the upcoming Animal Friends, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, and Dan Levy, directed the Legendary comedy The Machine, based on comedian Bert Kreischer’s well-known story.
Ferrell, Atencio, and Callaham are all represented by UTA. Ferrell is also repped by Mosaic and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Atencio by Artists First; and Callaham by Kaplan/Perrone and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
