Jim Carrey recently shared his interest in reprising his role as the Grinch, but what about other iconic characters he’s played?
The comedian was recently asked about the possibility of a sequel to The Mask, the 2004 comedy that not only introduced Cameron Diaz to the world but also became a massive hit, grossing $351 million worldwide.
This made The Mask the fourth highest-grossing film of 2024. So, would Carrey be willing to return as the green-faced trickster?
“Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess,” Carrey responded. “It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money. … But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things.”
In addition to his thoughts on The Mask, Carrey has made headlines for his past statements about retirement. In April 2022, he mentioned that he was “fairly serious” about retiring from acting.
However, despite those remarks, Carrey is now back as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and has expressed interest in reprising his role as the Grinch.
“I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting,” Carrey clarified. “Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, things tend to change.”
As for the Grinch, Carrey made it clear that he would be open to returning to the role “if we could figure out” a way that wouldn’t involve spending hours in makeup.
“The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe,” Carrey said. “It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time.
‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”
