Keanu Reeves is eager to step back into John Constantine’s signature trench coat and tie. Nearly two decades after first portraying the DC Comics/Vertigo character in Francis Lawrence’s 2005 film Constantine, Reeves believes there is finally progress on a long-discussed Constantine 2.
Although Reeves has been vocal about his desire for a sequel since 2019, he recently shared that Constantine 2 may now be at the scriptwriting stage.
“We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’” Reeves told Inverse. “So, we’re going to try and write a script.”
While he remained tight-lipped on specific plot details, Reeves confirmed that he and Lawrence’s vision for the sequel remains set in the same dark and brooding world as the original.
“We’re not going off that,” he stated, also teasing that the beloved occultist won’t be catching a break anytime soon. “John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more.”
Reeves and Francis Lawrence recently reunited on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to reflect on Constantine’s 20th anniversary, discuss the film’s legacy, and explore the sequel’s potential. “It’s just fun to be in the same room and talk Constantine,” Reeves remarked.
Francis added, “Akiva [Goldsman] is writing, and Keanu and Akiva and I have been collaborating, and I think we have some really, really great ideas that we’re super, super excited about. And I think we’re pretty close on having an object that is really workable.”
Though Constantine has been absent from the big screen for years, Matt Ryan has kept the character alive through various live-action and animated television projects, including a short-lived Constantine NBC series.
