Scarlett Johansson is remaining disconnected from social media.
The 40-year-old actress revealed in an interview that she turned down a request from Universal Pictures to create a social media account in support of her upcoming film, Jurassic World Rebirth.
“I mean, even today, I got an email from Universal, and they’re like, ‘Hey, would you consider joining Instagram in tandem with the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth?’ ” she told the outlet.
Johansson went on to explain, “[I] get a lot of pressure to join social media,” noting that it makes her question, “Is there a way I could do this and stay true to who I am? It didn’t feel like I could.”
The Marvel star said one reason she avoids social media is that she does not want to pretend to enjoy it.
“The work that I put out there is all based in truth. That’s the key ingredient. So if I was a person who really enjoyed social media, then I could totally get on the bandwagon,” she said. “But I’m not. And I think the film will do fine.”
Elsewhere in her interview, Johansson acknowledged that despite not having a social media presence, she is one of the few celebrities with their own beauty brand, The Outset. She also shared that her former business partner, Kate Foster, had previously encouraged her to join Instagram.
“I got close enough to talk to my therapist about it. I was like, I guess this is something I need to do. But it goes against my core values,” she said. “I think it was more about: How do I express that too? Because there’s so much expectation from….”
Despite her stance, Johansson occasionally makes brief appearances on The Outset’s Instagram account, describing her involvement as “minimally invasive.”
In April 2023, the Black Widow actress opened up about her absence from social media during an appearance on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast.
“I honestly am too fragile of a person to have social media,” she said. “My ego is too fragile. I can’t deal with it. My brain is too fragile, I’m like a delicate flower. I have enough anxiety.”
At the time, Johansson admitted that she had briefly experimented with Instagram, spending “three days” on the platform before ultimately deleting her account.
“When I started realizing that I’d spent 20 minutes looking at somebody’s Instagram page who worked for a friend of mine — I now know you have a pit bull, two daughters, and live in Burbank — I was like, I just wasted 17 minutes of time,” she recalled. “I now feel like I should move to California, get this specific dog and change my life in all these ways.”
She continued, “I felt so bad, like I was missing out on this random person’s life,” adding, “I can’t do this. I’m too fragile, I have so much anxiety about other things.”
Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2.
