Alien: Romulus has proven to be one of the biggest cinematic successes of the year, revitalizing the Alien franchise and reigniting fan enthusiasm.
Directed by Fede Álvarez, the film delivered relentless jump scares, gruesome gore, and arguably the most terrifying Xenomorphs ever seen in the series.
Following the movie’s impressive performance, a sequel was officially greenlit in October, with Álvarez set to return as director. However, updates on the project have been scarce—until now. Álvarez recently shared an exciting development.
In an interview with io9, the acclaimed director confirmed that he and his longtime writing collaborator, Rodo Sayagues, are actively developing the sequel.
Álvarez expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Well, I mean, we definitely want to do it. The studio wants to do it. I want to do it.” He elaborated on their creative approach, emphasizing the importance of finding the right narrative:
“I think with sequels, it’s always about finding the right story. Me and Rodo [Sayagues], my co-writer, we have some ideas, but it’s not until we find something that we go, ‘OK, that is a movie worth making,’ that we really go on it.
So that’s the process we are in right now, trying to find a story that is worthy of everyone’s time and is worthy of the title.”
Álvarez also stressed the need for caution when approaching sequels, underscoring that their team is determined to avoid making a follow-up merely for commercial reasons.
“Otherwise, you never want to fall into the mistake of making [a sequel] just because the first one is a big hit… [making a sequel] just because you can make it, that’s always a recipe for disaster,” he warned.
Alien: Romulus – A Landmark Success for 20th Century Studios
Released earlier this year, Alien: Romulus has cemented its place as a major box office triumph. The film grossed over $350 million globally, with $245 million coming from international markets.
Critics and audiences alike praised the feature, earning it a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 80% critics’ score and an impressive 85% audience rating.
As for what the sequel might go through, 20th Century Studios executive Steve Asbell has hinted at possible directions for the story.
He highlighted the standout performances of the film’s survivors, Rain (played by Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (portrayed by David Jonsson), saying,
“The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like, ‘Wow, where do people want to see them go next?’
We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I fell in love with both of them, and I want to see what their story is.”
With Álvarez’s creative vision and the passionate response to the first film, the upcoming sequel is already generating high expectations.
Fans can anticipate a carefully crafted continuation of the Alien saga that promises to uphold the franchise’s legacy of terror and innovation.
