If the name Steven D. Bingley-Ellison doesn’t ring a bell, you might know him better as Flying Lotus, the Grammy-winning American record producer, DJ, filmmaker, and rapper.
While Flying Lotus is primarily known for his seven studio albums, he actually studied film at both the Los Angeles Film School and Academy of Art University. He’s now applying his film education to his latest cinematic project, Ash.
Ash is an upcoming science fiction thriller that centers around a woman who awakens on a distant planet to discover that the crew of her space station has been murdered. She must decide if she can trust the man sent to rescue her.
The film stars Eiza González (Baby Driver, 3 Body Problem), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Westworld), Iko Uwais (The Raid, The Night Comes For Us), Beulah Koale (Next Goal Wins), and Kate Elliott (Wentworth). Ash is executive produced by Neill Blomkamp.
Flying Lotus also appears in the film and worked with screenwriter Jonni Remmler. As expected, the film will feature an original score composed by Flying Lotus, who has previously directed the Shudder Original Kuso and contributed a segment to V/H/S/99.
Ash will be released theatrically by RLJE Films and streamed on Shudder in 2025. The film was produced and financed by XYZ Films in partnership with IPR.VC, and a new trailer was recently revealed at New York Comic Con.
Here’s the official synopsis:
On the mysterious planet Ash, Riya (González) wakes up to find her crew slaughtered. When Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, a psychological and physical nightmare begins, as Riya and Brion must determine if they can trust each other to survive.
From Grammy Award-winning artist Flying Lotus (a.k.a. Steven Ellison) comes his feature film, Ash.
