Ayo Edebiri plays a journalist who unexpectedly finds herself at a cult gathering in her new A24 film.
A24 has unveiled the trailer for Opus, a thriller in which the Emmy-winning The Bear star, 29, stars alongside John Malkovich. Malkovich portrays Moretti, a massively famous but reclusive musician, who invites Edebiri’s character, Ariel Ekton, to spend a weekend at his secluded compound for an “exclusive listening experience” of his new album.
When Ariel arrives at Moretti’s compound, she encounters a group of celebrities and journalists. However, things quickly take a disturbing turn as the people there begin acting strangely.
Ariel becomes increasingly concerned and asks others if they share her worries, but she is brushed off. As the situation unfolds, it becomes apparent that things may take a dangerous direction.
According to the official film synopsis, Opus follows “a young writer invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared thirty years ago.”
Surrounded by the star’s devoted followers and intoxicated journalists, Ariel soon realizes she has become entangled in his twisted plan.
Edebiri and Malkovich, 71, are joined in the cast by Juliette Lewis, The White Lotus‘ Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, Young Mazino, and Tatanka Means.
The movie is written and directed by Mark Anthony Green, who makes his directorial debut with Opus after previously creating the short film Trapeze, U.S.A.
Opus is Edebiri’s first feature film since Inside Out 2, in which she voiced the character Envy. Apart from her role on The Bear, she also appeared in Omni Loop and Bottoms in 2023, and lent her voice to Everybody Still Hates Chris.
Malkovich’s most recent film appearance was in Well Done! (2023), and he is also slated to appear in the upcoming 2025 Marvel film The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Opus will hit theaters on March 14.
