In 2024, fans were disappointed by the cancellation of several beloved shows, including NCIS: Hawai’i, My Lady Jane, and Star Wars: The Acolyte.
My Lady Jane, available on Prime Video, offered a bold reimagining of Lady Jane Grey’s brief reign.
In this version, Jane (Emily Bader) and her husband Guildford (Edward Bluemel) avoid execution, and in a world where some people can transform into animals, the story takes on a whimsical twist.
“I think I heard someone say that every tortured female heroine in history deserves a rom-com written about her. I think they really do,” Bader remarked in June 2024.
She praised the show’s focus on the female perspective, calling it “a refreshing take on a female story.” The show’s cancellation just two months later was unexpected, especially for Bader, Bluemel, and the rest of the cast who were eager to continue the tale.
Similarly, Star Wars: The Acolyte faced the same unfortunate fate. Despite being vastly different in tone and content, this Disney+ series was not renewed for a second season.
The show had quickly garnered a dedicated fanbase, particularly for its fresh take on the Star Wars universe and the strong performances of Amandla Stenberg and Manny Jacinto, who received widespread praise from viewers.
Shows That Were Cancelled in 2024
Our Flag Means Death (Max) was set in the early 18th century, following the comedic misadventures of a gentleman pirate and his crew. Loosely based on the life of Stede Bonnet, the series aired for two seasons after its March 2022 debut on HBO Max, but was canceled in January 2024.
Minx (Starz), set in the 1970s, told the story of a young feminist who collaborates with a low-budget publisher to create the first erotic magazine for women.
Premiering on Max in 2022, the show was renewed for a second season, only to be canceled during filming. Starz briefly revived the series, but it was canceled again in January 2024.
NCIS: Hawai’i (CBS), which premiered in 2021 as the first NCIS spinoff with a female lead, was also canceled.
Vanessa Lachey played Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant, leading a team of elite agents in Oahu. CBS confirmed in April that the show would not return for a fourth season, leaving fans fighting unsuccessfully to save it.
Walker (The CW) was another casualty of 2024. Starring Jared Padalecki as Cordell Walker in a reboot of the 1990s series Walker, Texas Ranger, the show ran for four seasons before Nexstar’s acquisition of The CW led to a wave of cancellations.
Evil (Paramount+), a supernatural drama following a group investigating potential paranormal events for the Catholic Church, was also cut short.
Starring Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, and Aasif Mandvi, the show received a shortened fifth and final season, set to conclude in August 2024. Despite this, the cast remains hopeful that the series could find a new home.
Wolf Pack (Paramount+), a supernatural drama starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, followed two teenagers turned werewolves after a California wildfire. Premiering in January 2023, the show was canceled exactly a year later.
My Lady Jane (Prime Video) reimagined Tudor-era England with shapeshifters and a happier fate for Lady Jane Grey.
Fans loved the chemistry between the leads and the campy storylines, but just weeks after its debut, the show was canceled in August 2024, despite a strong online following.
Lastly, Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) premiered in June 2024, set before the Skywalker Saga. The series followed Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) as he reconnects with former pupil Osha (Amandla Stenberg) to uncover sinister forces.
Manny Jacinto’s performance as The Stranger became a fan favorite, but despite the show’s growing popularity, it was canceled in August 2024, leaving fans wondering what could have been.
