David Genat, the winner of Deal or No Deal Island, had multiple opportunities to walk away with a seven-figure prize during the show’s season 2 finale.
However, the Survivor Australia star rejected seven different offers before ultimately securing the biggest prize in TV game show history.
The season finale, which aired on Tuesday, March 25, largely revolved around Genat’s groundbreaking performance after it was revealed early on that he had defeated Alexis Lete to become the last remaining contestant.
Upon reaching the final temple, the 45-year-old engaged in a high-stakes game of Deal or No Deal, where the highest case on the board contained an astonishing $12,232,001—the total amount accumulated throughout the season.
Relying on a combination of risk-taking and luck, Genat successfully eliminated smaller cases, causing the banker’s offers—revealed to be Chrissy Teigen—to escalate dramatically.
Despite already having earned $500,000 from his Survivor victory and his role as host of the Australian adventure series Rush, Genat wasn’t inclined to settle for a prize that most reality shows would consider a jackpot.
After eliminating nearly all of the 26 cases, Genat accepted Teigen’s offer of $5,800,000, nearly doubling the previous reality TV prize record set by Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings, who had won $2,520,700.
Over the course of his game, Genat turned down three six-figure offers as well as offers of $1,523,000, $1,980,000, and $3,870,018.
As the game progressed, he took increasingly bold risks, much to the dismay of his fellow contestants, who pleaded with him to accept one of the life-changing offers Teigen, 39, presented.
In an interview, Genat described his approach as “cavalier,” acknowledging the immense risk he took. “‘Risky’ also works,” he admitted, recognizing that one wrong move could have left him with just $75.
“I came into this show wanting to do something that hadn’t been seen on television before,” he told. “I thought, ‘1.8 million? I could do a couple more shows, and if my career goes well, I could make that over the next decade.’
It’s a lot of money, but I believed in my ability to earn it. I definitely had moments where I justified my decisions.”
Genat’s victory marked a historic moment on NBC’s competitive reality adaptation of its classic game show, but his journey to the finale wasn’t an easy one.
Known as Survivor’s Golden God, he faced early scrutiny from other contestants due to his physical stature, all while keeping his Survivor Australia background a secret.
He formed an alliance with fellow Survivor alum Parvati Shallow and Dickson Wong, calling themselves the Family. The group worked strategically to protect one another, but in the end, Genat was the last player standing.
His reality TV career, however, is far from over. The season 2 champion is now reportedly set to compete in Survivor: Australia vs. the World, scheduled to air later this year.
