Dexter is set to return for another intense and thrilling adventure.
The famed serial killer makes his comeback on the small screen with Dexter: Original Sin, debuting on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, December 13.
This prequel series, featuring Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, explores the character’s evolution from a student to a vengeful serial killer.
According to the show’s synopsis, “When Dexter’s bloodthirsty urges can no longer be ignored, he must learn to harness his inner darkness.”
Under the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), Dexter adopts a Code designed to help him identify and eliminate individuals who deserve to be removed from society without attracting the attention of law enforcement.
This becomes particularly challenging for young Dexter as he embarks on a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
The first teaser for the crime drama reveals Gibson emerging from an elevator, while Michael C. Hall, who portrayed Dexter in the original Showtime series, provides a voiceover declaring, “I am a killer.”
Hall continues, “But I wasn’t born this way,” as the teaser briefly features scenes with CSI chief Tanya Martin (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Harry. “I was made by my history and the people around me.”
Set to a backdrop of urgent, bass-heavy club music, the teaser introduces more of the star-studded cast, including Christina Milian and Patrick Dempsey, interspersed with glimpses of a high school altercation.
“They say it takes a village to raise a killer,” Hall adds, as Dexter is shown wielding a distinctive knife.
The teaser concludes with a close-up of Dexter’s dark expression, followed by the show’s blood-red title displayed onscreen.
Joining Gibson, Gellar, Slater, Dempsey, and Milian in the cast are Molly Brown, Debra Morgan, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson. Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner for the original series, returns to lead the prequel.
The casting of Gellar, Slater, and Dempsey was a strategic choice by network executives to evoke the 1990s era in which the show is set.
The selected actors, known for their roles in prominent 1990s projects and continued success, help capture the period’s essence.
Dexter: Original Sin follows the original Dexter series, which aired for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013 and was followed by the miniseries Dexter: New Blood.
The original series earned four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in 2010 and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2010 for John Lithgow’s portrayal of Arthur Mitchell.
Hall also won a Golden Globe in 2010 for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Drama.
Dexter: Original Sin premieres on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, December 13, and will also debut on Showtime in the U.S. on Sunday, December 15.
