A sequel to Coco is officially in development at Pixar Animation Studios, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced on Thursday.
Speaking at Disney’s Annual Shareholder Meeting, Iger revealed the title, Coco 2, and confirmed that the film is still in the early stages of development. The theatrical release is currently set for 2029.
The sequel will reunite members of the original creative team, including director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4, Inside Out 2) will serve as producer.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon,” Iger said.
Released in 2017, Coco follows a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician but is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead.
There, he embarks on a journey to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary musician, in hopes of securing his family’s blessing to pursue his passion for music.
Coco earned widespread acclaim and won two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Remember Me”, written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. The film also took home a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and Critics’ Choice Awards in similar categories.
In addition to the sequel, Disney is developing a Coco ride-through attraction, set to debut at Disney California Adventure.
