The video posted on Donald Trump’s social media account showcased hypothetical news headlines, including references to a “unified reich” alongside other positive messages about an election win and economic prosperity.
President Biden criticized Trump for using “Hitler’s language” and condemned the video’s content, which also included references to World War I.
The word “reich” indeed carries strong associations with Nazi Germany’s Third Reich. However, in the video shared by Trump, the reference to a “unified reich” appears to allude to the historical formation of the modern pan-German nation in 1871, unifying smaller states into a single empire.
While the term itself has historical significance, its usage in the context of the video still sparked controversy and criticism due to its association with Nazi Germany.
The 30-second video, shared on Trump’s account, comes amid his efforts to portray President Biden as soft on antisemitism.
However, Trump has faced criticism himself for using language and rhetoric linked to Nazi Germany, despite his attempts to highlight Biden’s alleged shortcomings in this regard.
The video was posted and shared on the former president’s Truth Social account while he was on a lunch break from his Manhattan “hush money” trial. It remained on the platform until being removed the following morning.
“This was not a campaign video; it was created by a random account online and reposted by a staffer who clearly did not see the word (reich), while the president was in court,” Karoline Leavitt, the campaign press secretary, said in a statement.
The campaign later updated the statement, attributing the post to a “junior staffer.” Meanwhile, the White House condemned the video shared on Trump’s account.
“It is abhorrent, sickening, and disgraceful for anyone to promote content associated with Germany’s Nazi government under Adolf Hitler,” said Senior Deputy White House Communications Director Andrew Bates.
He added, “Any antisemitic dog whistling is dangerous and offensive — and profoundly un-American.”
During a Tuesday campaign event in Boston, the President also criticized the post.
“Yesterday, his campaign posted online about if he wins it’ll be a unified reich — like the Third Reich,” Mr. Biden said. “This is the same guy that uses Hitler’s language, not America’s.”
Earlier this month, Trump likened Mr. Biden’s administration to the Gestapo, the secret Nazi police force.
He has previously used rhetoric reminiscent of Adolf Hitler, such as describing immigrants entering the U.S. illegally as “poisoning the blood of our country” and referring to his opponents as “vermin.”
Trump has faced criticism for dining with Holocaust-denying white nationalist Nick Fuentes in 2022 and for downplaying the 2017 Charlottesville rally, where white nationalists chanted “Jews will not replace us!”
At least one of the headlines flashing in the video appears to be directly copied from a Wikipedia entry on World War I, stating,
“German industrial strength and production had significantly increased after 1871, driven by the creation of a unified reich.”
Additionally, in one image, the headlines “Border Is Closed” and “15 Million Illegal Aliens Deported” appear above smaller text indicating the start and end dates of World War I.
