Drew Barrymore recently shared a heartwarming memory from 50 First Dates that she’ll always treasure.
On Monday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress revealed that she recently found one of her daughters hanging out with one of Adam Sandler’s daughters, watching their 2004 romantic comedy together.
“My daughter and Adam’s daughter were watching it at my house the other night,” Barrymore shared, amused.
“I was like, ‘Why are you guys watching this? Don’t you get enough of me and your dad?’” she joked. “But they were just so happy, and I thought, ‘Oh, this is so sweet and wonderful.’”
Although Barrymore didn’t specify which of their daughters were watching the movie, she has two daughters—Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10—with ex-husband Will Kopelman. Sandler, meanwhile, shares daughters Sunny, 16, and Sadie, 18, with his wife Jackie.
The story came up while Barrymore was talking with Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage stars Montana Jordan and Emily Osment.
Osment admitted she only watched 50 First Dates for the first time a few months ago and mentioned how “comforting” it must be for Barrymore to see her kids showing an interest in her work.
Barrymore agreed, “It is! Because your kids will—often—reject so many things about you, so when you see them embracing something, it’s like, ‘Oh, how fantastic!’”
50 First Dates, directed by Peter Segal, tells the unconventional love story between marine veterinarian Henry (Sandler) and art teacher Lucy (Barrymore), who suffers from anterograde amnesia, preventing her from forming new memories after her accident.
Although the couple ends up together in the movie, Barrymore recently revealed that an alternate ending was originally planned, where they go their separate ways.
“The original ending was her saying, ‘You should go and live your life, because this is no life here,’” she explained to her “Drew’s News” co-anchor Ross Mathews.
“He leaves, but then he comes back, walks into the restaurant, and just sits down and says, ‘Hi, I’m Henry.’ And that’s how the film ends.” Mathews responded, “Honestly, can I just say: Thank you. Thank you for changing it.”
