Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar have been spotted in Sydney as the actor prepares to reprise one of his most iconic roles.
The Hollywood couple made a low-profile arrival in Australia for Freddie to begin filming the sequel to the 1990s cult classic I Know What You Did Last Summer.
They were seen dining at Chin Chin, a popular Surry Hills restaurant, alongside their children—15-year-old Charlotte Grace and 12-year-old Rocky James—on Saturday.
The family is reportedly staying in a private residence in Sydney until Christmas. They plan to return to the United States once filming concludes.
Freddie, 48, has long been rumored to be reprising his role as Ray Bronson in the upcoming reboot of the 1997 horror thriller. Sarah, 47, confirmed his involvement last month, and the couple recently arrived in Sydney to begin production.
Although Sarah also starred in the original film as Helen Shivers, her character’s fate in the story means she will not be appearing in the sequel. However, she remains actively involved on set as her close friend, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, directs the project.
“We joke that I have an unofficial job, which is continuity,” Sarah told last month. “I’m always the one saying, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial title.”
Freddie and Sarah’s relationship has deep ties to the franchise—they first met on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer but didn’t start dating until three years later. They are now regarded as one of Hollywood’s most enduring success stories.
Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played Julie James in the original, is also rumored to reprise her role, though she has not yet been spotted in Australia.
The new cast includes a mix of rising stars and familiar faces such as Monster actor Nicholas Chavez, The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Lola Tung, Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline, Bodies Bodies Bodies’ Chase Sui Wonders, and One Tree Hill’s Austin Nichols.
Nicholas Chavez recently surprised fans in Melbourne with a low-key visit to a café, where he posed for photos with a fan who shared the encounter on TikTok.
He has kept most details of his trip under wraps, but his girlfriend, Victoria Abbott, shared glimpses of their Australian adventures on Instagram.
Highlights included a romantic hot air balloon ride at sunset and interactions with local wildlife like kangaroos and koalas.
The original I Know What You Did Last Summer followed four teenagers who accidentally hit and kill a man with their car, only to be stalked by someone who knows their dark secret.
The 1997 hit starred Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki, Bridgette Wilson, and the late Anne Heche, alongside Freddie and Sarah.
Loosely based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel, the movie spawned two sequels—I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006). A 2021 Amazon Prime series adaptation ran for just one season.
The highly anticipated sequel, which has been in the works since early 2023, is set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025.
Directed by Robinson and co-starring an exciting ensemble, the film aims to bring the nostalgic horror franchise back to life for a new generation.
