A reboot of Friday Night Lights could soon become a reality. Universal Television is developing a new iteration of the acclaimed football drama, with original creators Jason Katims, Pete Berg, and Brian Grazer involved, Deadline has confirmed.
Unlike the original series, this reboot is expected to feature a fresh storyline with new characters, while still being set in high school football world.
It will not bring back the previous cast, which included Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Taylor Kitsch, and Jesse Plemons.
The project is currently in its early stages but has already been taken to market.
Talks of reviving Friday Night Lights—either as a series or a movie—have persisted since the show concluded after five successful seasons.
Based on H.G. Bissinger’s book and a 2004 film, the original series was set in the fictional town of Dillon in rural West Texas, revolving around a high school football team coached by Chandler’s Eric Taylor. Britton portrayed his wife, Tami Taylor.
The show also featured an ensemble cast including Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki, Jurnee Smollett, Michael B. Jordan, and Matt Lauria.
Produced by Universal Television, Imagine Television, and Film 44, the series earned critical acclaim and a devoted fan base.
Friday Night Lights premiered on NBC in 2006, running for two seasons on the network.
Following the 2007 writers’ strike, a co-production deal with DirecTV allowed the show to continue for three additional seasons on The 101 Network before airing on NBC.
