Don Gilet’s move from EastEnders to Death in Paradise is indeed intriguing. Playing Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson marks a significant shift from his previous role as Lucas Johnson in EastEnders.
It’s like he’s been handed a prized opportunity, especially given the show’s popularity. Fans will undoubtedly be eagerly awaiting his debut in the Christmas special.
“This is a big show, with a big heart and the love continually grows for it,” Gilet said.
“Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands.”
Gilet – who has already begun filming in Guadeloupe – said he intends to remain “grateful, humbled and dedicated” to the programme.
“Even during those testing times when every sinew is screaming at me to run off the set and dive into the sea, swimming pool or an ice-cold beer – whichever happens to be closer at the time!”
The upcoming 14th series of Death in Paradise, set in the picturesque backdrop of Saint Marie’s shimmering seas and sun-soaked beaches, is highly anticipated.
Don Gilet’s character, DI Wilson, adds a new dynamic as he arrives from London, initially less than thrilled with his new surroundings.
Taking over from Ralf Little’s DI Neville Parker, he becomes the fifth lead detective in the show’s history, following notable actors like Ben Miller, Kris Marshall, and Ardal O’Hanlon.
Interestingly, Gilet had a prior guest appearance in the fourth series, showcasing his versatility within the Death in Paradise universe.
With his extensive acting background, including roles in Holby City, Silent Witness, Doctor Who, Shetland, and The Stranger, Gilet brings depth to the character of DI Wilson.
Produced by Red Planet Pictures, Death in Paradise’s global appeal is evident, with licensing to over 230 territories by BBC Studios.
Building on its success, the announcement of a new spin-off series, Return to Paradise, set in Australia, further expands the franchise’s universe, promising more captivating mysteries to come.
