Gal Gadot has transitioned from superhero to the role of the Evil Queen. During Disney’s D23 fan event on Friday in Anaheim, Calif., the studio revealed the first teaser for the live-action remake of Snow White, offering a glimpse of the Wonder Woman star as the malevolent monarch.
“Magic mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest one of all?” Gadot intones in the trailer.
In keeping with the latest trend of Disney live-action remakes, Gadot’s appearance remains true to the character’s design in the original 1937 film, Disney’s first feature-length animation.
The live-action Evil Queen is adorned with a tall, pointed crown, a headpiece covering her hair, and a purple dress with long, flowing sleeves.
Gadot shared her excitement about portraying the villain on stage at D23. “It was a lot of fun to get to do something completely different than anything I’ve ever done before,” she remarked during a panel.
“She’s delicious, she’s evil, she’s magical, I got to sing all these different songs — it was incredible.”
The teaser also provides more glimpses of the dwarfs, showing their silhouettes as they march to (or from) work in the mines before revealing Doc, Grumpy, Sleepy, Happy, Sneezy, Bashful, and Dopey dancing with Snow White in their cottage.
The true highlight of the teaser, however, is West Side Story and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes actress Rachel Zegler, who stars as the titular princess.
Zegler is seen singing “Whistle While You Work,” gazing wistfully into a well, and wandering through a forest, where she is attacked by a moving tree and encounters a friendly deer (hopefully not a Bambi crossover, but with Disney, you never know).
Zegler expressed her joy at playing Disney’s first princess. “It’s just been the honor of a lifetime,” she said.
“Any young person, any little girl, you get to put on a Disney princess dress and be her for a day, let alone six months in London on these incredible sets in a Sandy Powell-designed dress — it’s just been the most amazing experience, and I can’t wait to share it with you all.”
The trailer concludes with a gnarled hand (presumably Gadot’s, post-transformation) offering Snow White a deadly red apple. Maybe she won’t eat it this time! Snow White is set to hit theaters on March 21, 2025.
