So far, Tony Beets hasn’t found any gold, Parker went all-in on a piece of land that’s bleeding him money and Rick Ness is neck-deep in debt, that’s the current state of Gold Rush Season 14, in which we see the ups and downs of Yukon gold miners and their challenges. Old rivalries are gone, they are all seeking gold, they’re trying to make ends meet and, in the process, we see what goes on.
In this last episode, as you will see from our recap with spoilers for context, there were a lot of hurdles and problems met by all the crews, and they all had their own ways of solving them. As the saying goes, there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and in this episode, that saying fits the case just right.
Recap
The episode kicks off with Tony Beets inspecting a beat-up, almost unsalvageable dredge machine, there’s a lot of work to do, like electrical wiring, motors, sluice boxes, and the works. Tony and his crew are doing massive mining work with their mechanical shovels, but so far, he hasn’t found a single gold nugget, and he must make at least six thousand ounces to break even. The shaker wash plant needs reassembly and that drains his budget even more.
They carefully reassemble the shaker wash plant without many hassles, now they assemble spray tubes, spring loads and we’re taken through the entire process. One of Tony’s workers is being lazy, so he sends him home without pay for the day after a little discussion.
Tony Beets moves the shaker to the grounds and starts his operation. He needs to get some gold, or he’ll be bankrupt. Plant in place, Tony is closer to get some gold for the first time this season. Then, the Yukon Mining Inspectors visit Tony to check on his worker’s licenses and find some irregularities and shut down his operations until his workers get all their paperwork in order.
We move to Rick Ness’s dig site, he needs 1,000 ounces of gold to get back on his feet but so far, he’s only mined 95 ounces of gold. After paying royalties and other stuff, he’s down to sixty-five ounces of gold. He makes a deal with the landlord, he’s stressed. And Rick and his crew are hands in. The wash plant is loaded and running, but Morgan notices a billow of smoke from the wash plant.
As it turns out, the conveyor belt got stuck, it broke, and he needs to replace it. So, the operation is halted, Rick is trying to fix it, and so does his crew. One of his employees drives to an abandoned wash plant nearby and see if he can salvage a conveyor belt while they get the new one to get the wash plant going. They do some tinkering and the make the belt fit, the wash plant will run slower, but that’s better than nothing.
The next day, Rick’s wash plant feeder breaks down again, shutting down all the gold operations. There’s too much load on the wash plant, and a huge rock made the plant get stuck. But the rock has gold nuggets in it. They fix it and they’re back in action. These stops hamper Rick’s capacity to pay his debts by the end of the week to his landlord.
We move to Parker Schnabel’s camp, he bought a 15$ million plot of land and he’s short a couple of thousand ounces of gold to break even and start making profits, he confesses he’s stressed about it. The excavators are working, his crew is tired, and the wash plant and sluicing operation are not all capacity because there’s a lot of bedrock trapping rock, and it’s going to be a difficult decision to dig deeper.
If he loses 30% in that gold cut, he loses a million dollars and that’s something he can’t afford, the wash plant works at full speed, and the crew keeps digging. Then, one of the excavators has a sprocket malfunction and it needs to get it fixed, so, that means Parker will be one excavator short for a couple of days while they repair the machine.
