Hans Zimmer Recalls Turning Down Marvel Movie Composing After DC Success

Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer isn’t in a hurry to score another superhero movie anytime soon. The 12-time Academy Award-nominated composer previously stated that he had “retired” from superhero films after working on Batman v Superman, and he recently reaffirmed that stance during an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“Look, I’ve done the trifecta. I’ve done Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and Wonder Woman,” Zimmer said.

“I mean, what do you want me to do? Some of the minor characters? Probably yes.” When asked whether Marvel had approached him to compose for one of their films, Zimmer admitted that they had—and that he had turned them down.

“Timing wasn’t great. And really, quite honestly, I’m looking for other things right now,” he explained. “That was very arrogant of me to say that. Kevin Feige said that to me, ‘Hans, what are you complaining about?’”

While Zimmer isn’t planning to work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the foreseeable future, he has already made a lasting mark on the superhero genre, particularly within DC.

His past superhero scores include Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, and Wonder Woman 1984.

Zimmer has also composed for Marvel characters before, though not within the MCU. He scored 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 2019’s Dark Phoenix, which were distributed by Sony and 20th Century Fox, respectively.

While these films were not originally part of the MCU, both the X-Men and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man have since been integrated into Marvel’s multiverse storylines.
