The Pretty Little Liars sequel/reboot on Max has been canceled after two seasons.
The streaming platform decided to end the series, a horror-themed reboot of the 2010s ABC Family/Freeform mystery, roughly three months after the second season, titled Summer School, concluded in June.
In a statement, Max expressed gratitude for the show’s creators and production team:
“While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Pretty Little Liars, we are so grateful to our co-creators, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, as well as the team at Warner Bros. Television, for reintroducing fans to this new iteration of liars who band together to fight the latest creepy villain terrifying Millwood.
Their unique and modern creative vision — combined with the immense talent of our cast and crew — gave the series a fun, horror-filled point of view that paid tribute to its original Rosewood roots.”
The second season ended with a hint of more potential scares, showing a group of girls wearing masks resembling the five Liars walking down their high school hallway. Unfortunately, that cliffhanger will now remain unresolved.
The Pretty Little Liars reboot was initially ordered straight-to-series by HBO Max (now Max) in September 2020.
The first season, titled Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, premiered on July 28, 2022, and was renewed for a second season soon after its finale.
The cast of season two included Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, Mallory Bechtel, Sharon Leal, Alex Aiono, Jordan Gonzalez, and Elias Kacavas.
The series was executive produced by Aguirre-Sacasa (known for Riverdale) and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, along with PLL creator Marlene King, Leslie Morgenstein, Gina Girolamo from Alloy Entertainment, and Michael Grassi, in partnership with Warner Bros. Television.
