The TheGrio Awards is to celebrate African-American excellence
“I created TheGrio Awards to honor and highlight African-American excellence and the remarkable advocates from other communities who genuinely stand by us,” said Byron Allen, chairman and CEO of Allen Media Group, in a statement.
Positive and powerful African-American role models such as Berry Gordy Jr., Rosa Parks, Muhammad Ali, and Martin Luther King Jr. had a significant impact on how I saw myself as a child and how my life unfolded.
We can never do enough to acknowledge and celebrate these remarkable people, especially for the benefit of our kids.”
What is TheGrio Awards about?
TheGrio, an American news website that focuses on the African-American community, presents the TheGrio Awards nationwide each year in a number of categories.
TheGrio is a section of the cable channel MSNBC. The Grio’s 100 list, “History Makers in the Making,” honors people who are influencing the future of America and was established in 2010. Recipients of awards are chosen from a variety of backgrounds in America, not just the African-American community.
Ten winners will be chosen from each of the ten award categories, which include Business, Health, Education, Science & the Environment, Media, Pop Culture, Arts & Culture, Service & Activism, Politics, and Sports.
Winners must continue their work and have a major influence on all of America in order to be considered for the Grio 100 list. The final list of awardees is determined by the editorial team of theGrio.com after consulting with contributors and experts; the top 100 recipients are changed every year.
