Hulu has officially confirmed the news during last month’s Toronto Film Festival, that it has acquired Nutcrackers, the family holiday comedy directed by David Gordon Green, which opened the festival and stars Ben Stiller.
The film is set to be released on November 29, 2024, on Hulu, and will also stream internationally on Disney+.
This acquisition, reportedly a multi-million-dollar deal, was the first major sale of the festival, where the film received a positive reception during its world premiere. Nutcrackers marks Stiller’s return to a leading role in a feature film after a seven-year hiatus.
In Nutcrackers, Stiller portrays a no-nonsense, work-obsessed city dweller who unexpectedly finds himself in charge of his unruly, orphaned nephews on their family farm.
The film also stars Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker, and Toby Huss. The nephews are played by newcomers and real-life brothers Homer, Ulysses, Atlas, and Arlo Janson.
The film was shot on the Janson family’s farm in Ohio. Green, who has long been friends with the brothers’ mother from their time in film school, based the movie on the Janson family’s real-life experiences. The screenplay was written by Leland Douglas.
UTA Independent Film Group handled the worldwide sales rights for the film, which was financed by Rivulet Films.
Producers include Rob Paris, Mike Witherill, and Nate Meyer from Rough House Pictures, which helped develop the script with Douglas.
